<description>This is such an interesting perspective. When I first started in online fandom (late 96) ASC and other Trek newsgroups scared the bejeesus out of me - they were a raw, wild frontier with no apparent rules and people who shouted at each other regularly, flames left and right. I did lurk for a while. Deja news was my pal for years. But early on I found mailing lists for interaction. It's all in where you're standing, isn't it? I subbed to ASCE - mailing list as soon as it was possible but have never posted. I still get ASCEM and yearn for some good, old-fashioned Harry/Tom. My experience is quite different to yours.

I've met many lovely Trek fans (many by the zen pool) so I don't think of all trek fandom as scary, just newsgroups. A few comments in fandom wank have suggested that some commenters there are still fighting old fights from old fandoms in poor new Smallville.

My first impulse on reading your entry was to flounce off to my lj and pout, "Why does everyone think we're Thugs and Divas?" but I recalled what I'd just read at Seema's blog about taking care of what you say and *g* well, there are thugs and divas. Often they seem to be the people saying, "Look! thugs and divas!" but there's also a lot of fans writing good fiction, making good vids and thinking interesting thoughts. So, you know, go Team Smallville. Rah! *g*
