Trek Links

I was checking out Roll Call for some unfortunates to put in Sickbay, and I
ended up at the Coffee Nebula
reading up on Seven’s favorite word (say it with me now), “irrelevant”. I have
my own page of Voyager Links, which fortunately
doesn’t require much upkeep since the show is off the air and new writers are rare.
Even old writers are getting scarce…

Anyway, further along the surfing path, I reached
Watt-Evans’
Laws of Fantasy
, and was struck by #6, If a story can be written without
a fantasy element, then don’t bother with the fantasy element.
I want to
rewrite that one a few different ways to apply to sci-fi and fanfic, but I’m
supposed to be rewriting Colony at the moment.

One last rule, from the same page: Debra Doyle’s Rule: If it has
horses and swords in it, it’s a fantasy, unless it also has a rocketship in it, in
which case it becomes science fiction. The only thing that’ll turn a story with a
rocketship in it back into fantasy is the Holy Grail.

::contemplates writing fic where Janeway et al go on quest for Holy Grail::

Shall I add that bunny to the Breeding Ground for you?

  3. Zeke Says:

CHAKOTAY: You’re taking us off course to look for WHAT?
JANEWAY: The Holy Grail. It’s a cup with certain special properties.
    PARIS: Such as?
    JANEWAY: Well… um… it’s holy.
SEVEN: An inefficient design. Any liquid contents would pour through the framework unimpeded.
KIM: So what you’re saying, Captain, is that you’re going to delay our journey home so we can find a cup that doesn’t work?
JANEWAY: Gentlemen, I didn’t ask for your opinions. I’ve given you your orders and I expect you to carry them out to the best of your ability. The mission is in the best interests of Starfleet, the Round Table, and something called a Flying Circus, so we owe it to ourselves to do our best. Now let’s get out there and find that grail!
    (Pause.)
SEVEN: You are unworthy of assimilation.

  4. Jemima Says:

Thank you kindly for that Five Minute Captain Janeway and the Holy Grail. Zeke, you are indeed worthy of assimilation.
